Closer to home than you might think

April 15, 2008

I’m referring to the following story over at news.com.au: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23541782-2,00.html.

This quote surprised me, “…supplies of basic commodities have dwindled in the face of soaring demand, triggering riots and outbreaks of violence from Haiti to Indonesia”. Indonesia is not too far from home for us Australians. I’m not sure of all the details so perhaps the follow on effects of the food crisis are reaching our doorstep and not the food crisis itself, however the story still caught my attention.

I feel a certain sense of personal responsibility here, I’m not a religious man but the old adage “do unto others as you would have done unto you” seems appropriate here. If we were the people starving right now, would we be wondering why some of the richest countries of the world weren’t helping?

I guess I do not know enough about the underlying issues here, so I need to do some research, though I can’t help but think that there HAS to be a solution out there to all of this.
